Hey everyone, welcome back to my blog! After a long summer, I’m starting fresh with A Level Media Studies ready to come back stronger and more focused than ever. It’s time to kick off the year with a bang.
Last year, I learned so much in Media Studies. The media language concept that stuck with me the most was semiotics understanding signs and symbols. Like how a red rose can mean love or danger depending on the context. For media production, what comes to mind first is pre-production planning things like storyboarding, scripting, and organizing shoots. And when it comes to representation, I found the idea of audience impact really interesting: how media influences how people see themselves and others, especially around race, gender, class, and sexuality.
One of my favorite highlights was the storyboard blog. I shared pictures of the detailed storyboard I created with my teammates for our film project. A big challenge was finding time to film with everyone especially since two group members didn’t care about passing the class. That made things really tough for me and the one girl who actually wanted to succeed. But we gave it our all. We overcame the struggle by prioritizing our time and scheduling everything carefully to make sure we could finish and get a passing grade.
I also learned how to edit using CapCut, which was a huge win for me because I came into AS Level Media Studies with zero editing experience. It turned out to be super useful and definitely necessary for the course. One thing I want to improve this year is my time management. I feel like if I get better at it, I’ll be able to finish everything early and have time to go back and fix anything before submitting so I can aim for the best possible score. I also want to improve how I study vocabulary terms. I took that for granted last year, and trust me, I regretted it when I walked into the exam room.
Media is part of my everyday life whether I’m on my phone or watching TV. My favorite platforms are TikTok and Netflix. I consume them all the time, and honestly, media plays a huge role in everyone’s life, even if they don’t realize it. So it’s cool to actually learn about how it works.
I’m a little nervous about A Level, to be honest. I was only 3 points away from passing AS Level, and I failed because I didn’t know enough vocabulary terms for the exam. I could’ve earned those points with my CCR (Creative Critical Reflection), but I chose the wrong group except for the one girl who’s still in my group this year. Because of that, I had to rush my CCR last minute, and it didn’t turn out well. So now I’m retaking the written exam and giving it everything I’ve got so I can pass AS Level and move forward with A Level Media Studies.
Looking back at my AS work, I’m proud of the effort I put into my blogs and how hard I worked with that one teammate to make things happen. This year, I want to push myself study 10x harder, manage my time better, and really grow. I think Media Studies connects to who I am because I’m constantly observing, analyzing, and expressing myself through the media I consume and this subject helps me understand the deeper meaning behind it all.
